You Already Know Where Your Business Is Stuck: Here's the Question to Prove It

Look beyond the next tactic and ask what you need to change as the leader to move your business forward.

By Anthea Horvat

The tactic is rarely the real answer. Ask what you, as the leader, need to change because you already know.

I can usually tell where a business is stuck within the first five minutes of talking to the owner. Not because I’m clever, but because, deep down, they already know.

The core idea

If I asked you what your business needs right now to grow to the next stage — to scale to wherever it is you want to go, you’d know the answer. You really would.

Now, your first answer might be a tactic. “I need better marketing.” “I need to run some Facebook ads.” “I need to hire.” But I want you to dig a little deeper than that.

What is it about you, as the leader of your business, that’s keeping you stuck where you are? No judgment — we carry more than enough of that already. But that’s usually the real thing. Where are you holding your business back?

It’s a great question, and one I ask myself often. Because honestly, I’m a master at keeping my own business stuck. Maybe you are too.
